History

Hokitika RSA

Hokitika RSA is open to all returned services personnel, families, and those interested in NZ military history. We are dedicated to honoring the memory of the brave individuals who have served our country. Our mission is to provide support, camaraderie, and a sense of community for all those who have been part of the military journey.

Our History

By the 1890s Hokitika had established its own Drill Hall which was used for volunteer troop training, located on Camp Street. Pictured are troops on parade outside the Drill Hall.

Following WW1 the then named Returned Soldiers Association built a hall for returned soldiers to meet and gather. It was located next to Seddon House where the Library is currently located, next to the new RSA.

On 6 July 1955 a new RSA building was opened, built in the current RSA’s location in late Art Deco style. Here it stood strong until it was deemed an earthquake risk in 2013, particularly the front veranda where the Bofors 40mm Gun sat.

In July 2014 the RSA was demolished, ironically with the veranda being the last and most difficult part of the build to pull down due to the vast amount of steel used to ensure its stability.

Hokitika RSA that you see today was opened on 28 February 2017 after a massive community fund raising effort.
